There are a few things that are head canon however, especially that regarding his background and details beyond the game.

 These are as follows:

Reno is not his real name. To this day a total of TWO people know it. Tseng and himself and neither are inclined to share.

Reno was born and raised in Midgar, a child of the slums. He grew up rough, but was lucky for the most part.

Yes, his mother was a whore. She died when he was 9.

He speaks and writes Wutian fluently, Wutai in canon passing for an equivalent of Japan.

Through shenanigans via breaking into a secure area, Reno was recruited into the Shin-Ra Military and then into the Turks. He was 18.

personality: In a nut shell, Reno seems pretty simple. He's a rude, arrogant punk that's a bit on the sleazy slide, who loves his underhanded and violent job, loves his boss, his partner and gives no fucks.

Most of the time he's exactly what it says on the box. A cocky and sly asshole lacking in manners and decorum with a taste for alcohol and violence. He flirts liberally,  banters easily, sometimes to the point of disrespect to his superiors and sure as hell likes to enjoy what he's doing.

Sometimes friendly and downright playful at times, it's easy to underestimate him as a moron.  All the more advantage to him.  It only takes a moment for the smile to turn cruel, the sly glee into something almost sinister. While the playful exterior is completely natural, it serves him well to hide the surprisingly cunning and crafty mind underneath. Reno's a lateral thinker with a knack for figuring people's triggers.

He's defiant, irritating and enjoys getting under peoples skin and making them squirm, getting his kicks sometimes just seeing how far he can push until someone snaps and loses control. He has no respect for people that hide themselves behind good behaviour and conform to expected status quo and just as little respect for the wannabe badasses.

Outside of work, Reno's a private guy that spends time with Rude or other workmates either drinking, tinkering with tech or just flying. He's happy to waste his time doing fuck all, smoking and drinking while listening to music, or to turn his hands to keeping his chopper and EMR in top order. That said, he doesn't get much time off.

As a Turk, a lot of Reno's work involves violence in one form or another and damn does he love his job. Life isn't all that precious to Reno, it simply is what it is. It's his opinion that all one can do is live the best they can until they go splat one way or another. He approaches violence like a familiar friend as well as a means to an end. To him it's a fact of life and sometimes can be a fun one at that. The fact is, he is willing to do what is necessary to get the job done, be it intimidation, kidnapping, or the liberal application of explosives

And indeed, despite his playful nature, Reno takes his job and his duties as a Turk seriously, displaying cool leadership and a calm hand in dealing with subordinates and enemies alike. He displays a great deal of respect , (in his own way) to his superior, Tseng and his formal superior, Veld, calling them by title rather than by name. He is a professional after all, easily separating work from play, content to ignore his duties when off the clock. He likes his job, he enjoys his position, but he won't kill himself for it. In fact he's a great deal more serious than most realise, always with an eye on the big picture, balancing humour with a realistic, if at times cynical point of view.

That's not to say he's a heartless born killer. He has his own code of sorts, a sense of honour amongst thieves. He has a heart somewhere beneath all the swag.  He's capable of forging strong friendships, the strongest of which is with Rude which go above and beyond conventional connections, has his moments of compassion and insight, rough and rare as they may be and has no problem acting as big brother to his subordinate Turks. Loyal to a fault to the rest of the Turks, whom he regards as family, Reno is fiercely protective of his own. In fact he's quite capable of losing his tempter when the safety of those close to him are compromised and is more than willing to join forces with an enemy if it means getting his people safe.

When it comes down to it, Reno isn't a born bad guy, he isn't a monster without heart and soul. He does regret the direction his job was taking, he did chafe at the darker and underhanded duties he was given.  However, rather than leave, Reno squared with his morals and stuck with his job. He showed no hesitation when detonating explosives that would result in the deaths of Thousands and  continues to show no regret for it. And now with Rufus turning ShinRa in a new direction, he's willing to step up and act the part, going light on the sinister while maintaining the intimidating reputation the Turks are infamous for, he remains someone you wouldn't want to mess with. Unless you're Cloud.

In the end he's no good guy, no gentleman and definitely shouldn't be anyone's hero.

abilities/powers: As a Turk, Reno received training and treatments to bring out the best of his natural capabilities.

He is the fastest of the Turks and that's no exaggeration, displaying exceptional speed and agility in combat. He's capable of scrambling up the side of a building with adequate hand holds at great speed, and can even use the momentum to flip upwards at the top. He's also capable of leaping higher than the average person which adds to the advantage of his long reach.

Reno has had training in martial arts, weaponry including swords, rods, firearms of various kinds and undoubtedly some of ShinRa's bigger weaponised machinery. He's almost received training in espionage, interrogation, stealth and the handling of explosives, traps and sensitive material.

He's an exceptional helicopter pilot, capable of piloting in a fierce weather conditions and even while under fire and has picked up enough knowledge to know how to repair and maintain his equipment. Reno is also a capable wielder of materia and has a fondness for lightning.

Due to his treatments, Reno displays above average endurance and strength as well as increased recovery rate. He can endure being thrown down like a rag doll, high falls and quite the beating with only scrapes and bruises to show for it. none the less, he's no SOLDIER. He's still pretty much human.

first person sample:
[The video feed clicks to show a skinny redhaired punk, peering at the camera with blue eyes.] Alright, it's workin'.

[He leans back casually against the wall, showing an expensive suit he lifted from a store, worn rumpled and loose. Smirking a little, he addresses the camera, speaking with a distinctive lazy drawl.]

Good evening, citizens of Abax. This is your friendly neighbourhood Turk speaking. Hiiiiiiii.

Before we get started, I already have the basics, so this is just to get a few questions outta the way.

First of all... Roadhouse? Is it any good?
Second, any one got a heater I can pinch or is fire the best we can do?
Thirdly... Anyone seen a guy, tall, brown skin, wears sunnies all the time and never makes a peep? Or hell, anyone with a distinctive taste in fashion like so?
[At this he tugs at his jacket lapel.]

Let me know, will ya?
[There's a suggestive smirk and the feed cuts off.]

third person sample:

He was starting to hate it here. Perched on a wall lining the sidewalk, Reno took a long drag from the cigarette dangling from his fingers. He held it in for a long moment, long enough to feel the his lungs strain before letting it out in a slow breath.

He'd never liked the cold, reminding him too much of nasty ass winters in the slums where you were more likely to find frozen bodies on the streets than rats and you were lucky if you could be certain of what you were eating, if you got food at all. Winter made him moody and this time, Rude wasn't here to knock him out of his funk.

Another drag, another slow release and Reno glared upwards at the dark sky, lip curling into a sneer. It was dark like the slums too. Actually, he could almost imagine he was back there, the plates towering over-

"Oh, fuck this." Reno snarled and slid to his feet, tossing the smoke to the side. Since when did he become a whiney ass emo? Pulling the coat tighter around his lean body, he began marching down the street, with no direction in mind. He just needed to move, to do something more than sit on his ass and feel pathetic.

He'd lived through too much to lie down now and he sure as hell wasn't letting this place take him without a fight. Glancing at one of the pale lifeless tree's that lined the high end street, Reno paused to consider it. Was it fighting to live? Had it given up?

He blinked at it for a moment before shifting his weight and kicking out. It cracked, the tree snapping, the top half falling to the asphalt with a raspy crackle of skinny branches and dead leaves. Reno bared his teeth at the stump left over and continued on his way, already feeling vastly better. He could do that much. Who's to stay he couldn't do more?
